Back to the practicalities. When a rider is switching between windsurf and SUP foiling, what equipment adjustments do they make?
Let’s take the Hover 122 SUP/ WS crossover and the Thrust/ Malolo surf foil as an example. With that combo you would mount the plate forward in the track system in order to sup foil. That brings the foil a bit further forward, more in the general stance area. Meaning that when you paddle it, your feet are first parallel and then when you decide to catch a wave and you change into surf stance, this will bring your back foot pretty much slightly behind the trailing edge of the mast which gets you in the perfect position to get on the foil and balance it. if you decide to windsurf the same board with that same foil then you would simply put the footstraps on, screw the mast base in and move the foil all the way back in the track. That then creates the balance where your feet are in the right proximity to the mast base and your back foot is again slightly behind and over the trailing edge of the mast. Again you will end up in a position where everything is perfectly in place to be balanced when on the foil.
What’s your own personal balance of SUP foiling vs regular SUP? Is there any aspect of SUP where foiling has become especially dominant for you?
Personally, I might be a bit of an exception. I see a lot of my friends fully committing to SUP foiling and not wanting to do anything else anymore. For me the approach is a bit different. I am lucky enough to have the gear to do both so I pick the flavour of the day depending on the conditions. I will certainly not give up a nice double over head surfing day to find smaller surf to go foiling. But foiling has opened up conditions and places for me that would have not been rideable in the past. That is the part I really enjoy. SUP
