TIPS FOR TRAVELLING TO CENTRAL AMERICA
Dangers and annoyances:
• Sharks and crocs are present. Don’t worry about them too much, but do be vigilant to warnings from locals.
• Crime. Breaking into cars is a national past time. Never leave valuables on display or unattended.
• Locals. The true “Tico” Costa Ricans couldn’t be more friendly. Watch out for a few of the expat Americans who have made Costa Rica their home since the 70s. The occasional one doesn’t like to share their adopted breaks.
• River crossings. If you have rented a four wheel drive (this is advisable) inevitably you will come to a river crossing. Many are impassable during the wet season, but, even when levels are low, scout the depth before plunging straight in.
Take with you:
• Insect repellent to deter the inevitable mosquitos.
• Loads of sun cream as the sun is incredibly intense out here.
• First aid kit. Make sure you have plenty of; alcohol wipes for cleansing cuts from reefs and rocks and rehydration powder which is really good to take when you have been on the water for hours and need to hydrate fast.
• A hammock. You never know where you may end up and it gives you the option to wild camp on one of the many beaches.
• A good knife. For beach BBQs, opening coconuts, and just because all adventurers should have a quality knife…
• SUP spares (fins, leash, ding repair). The larger towns have plenty of spares but they are more expensive than home and you can be sure if you break something you will do it in the middle of nowhere.
