If it’s a full moon, you might see the light glinting off the bay – if there’s a swell and high tide, you might hear the waves crashing against the rocks. But none of it will prepare you for what you’ll see in the morning: one of Africa’s best right-handed SUP waves – and arguably one of the best on the planet. Pick the right one off at the point, and your legs are going to be burning halfway through the 800m ride.
For the brothers Carpentier – Benoit, 21, and twins Pierre and Matthieu, 26, – they’ve not only lost count of how many turns and how many times they’ve ridden the wave, they’ve lost count of how many times they’ve been to Imsouane. They can tell you this: their parents first took them here more than ten years ago. The former windsurfers hailing from the northwest coast of France had picked up the surfing bug – and wasted no time in passing it on to their children, along with a keen sense of adventure. And ten years ago, a sense of adventure was what was needed to venture into this somewhat remote section of the Moroccan coast.
