It is heart breaking to witness over and over again the same mistakes being made by “developing countries” while managing a so called economical growth that benefits mostly the wealthiest to the detriment of the native people who end up losing their land. It is often the short term and speculative vision that drives coastal development. We have witnessed it in many spots around the world, like the Island of Sal in Cabo Verde where ghost residences are popping up in the sand dunes from the drug money laundering activities or on the Bukit peninsula in Bali where the most corrupted country in the world has allowed bulldozers to disfigure the ironically named “Dream Land” beach to fulfill the megalomaniac appetite of Indonesia’s former president’s son. Hopefully the Chilean government will realize that the country and its people have much more to win by preserving its coastline than by allowing wild development.
