That led to catching up for a few more beers later on with talk coming around to the fact that he’s living in Sumatra and that there’s “this wave”. Hardly anyone surfs it and the pics on his phone had me pretty excited.
I told this to Iballa and she fast tracked everything. With me being reluctant to commit to anything these days, she had me committing to a date when we would meet up. I wanted to get some footage of young Wes Fry, so I booked his ticket too and there was no backing out.
Shakira Westdorp and Iballa are good mates from the SUP wave world tour and Iballa asked her to come along as well. Shakira’s was a tight fit, having the Starboard photo shoot in Tahiti just before and then the Rottnest classic directly after. But not coming wasn’t even on the radar, her being a lover of all things Indo with a chance to hang out and just surf with her mate. I was the lowest common denominator having been on trips with all of them but was comfortable that we were a pretty compatible group, able to cohabit on an unknown adventure into the Sumatran Jungle.
