On our less than conventional honeymoon trip my wife Abi and I headed to El Salvador in search of empty and undiscovered waves as per the credo of any surf trip. We did find what we came for, but to begin with the waves were far from empty and there was a fair amount of competition in the water. We stayed at Las Flores resort, a 5 star luxury resort with a beachy pointbreak setup right out front which gets very busy throughout the day; you might catch two waves in an hour if you’re lucky. The crowd is made up of American, Brazilian, and a growing contingent of local surfers. Between them, they don’t let a wave pass without a look in.
As SUP surfers we definitely kept our distance, but our days became more relaxed as eyes were slowly opened to SUP surfing. “Oh you guys really surf those things huh?” The surfers we spoke to confessed to never observing anyone surfing a paddle board, only stroking up the coastline or across a lake.
