No Kandui
From Padang we prepared to leave the next day on the 120 mile boat ride out to Kandui Villas. We knew one of the biggest swells of the season was running, and to make matters worse a strong NWester was blowing some serious wind chop straight into Padang. We were told the trip was on so we arrived at Padang harbor the next day to be met by Zach from Kandui. We were briefed by the Captain. “The crossing is going to be rough, prepare yourselves. I recommend with 20ft waves that you make no attempt to puke over the side because it is easy to fall out; just puke on the boat or even on each other if you have too.”
The exit of Padang harbor was a sight to see. We were motoring along the perfectly flat water towards the entry channel buoys and there were 15ft breaking waves coming straight towards us. I wondered what the tactic would be. It was stick the throttle down and go for it, what a way to take our first breaking wave. We went up the face and the wave broke straight on top of us. The captain had done a great job as we carried enough speed to punch through the lip and crash down the other side, only to see another three waves coming and no turning back.
