Typical Polakow, looking at the entire globe for his next opportunity to tear it up on his windsurfer, tow board or SUP. Jason has more balls in the air than anyone I know. He is constantly juggling four or five different options that any first-class extremist would give their left knacker for. His sponsors Red Bull and Oxbow had been encouraging Jason to do a trip in his homeland to reconnect with his roots and country from which he’s been mostly absent; Western Australia became an obvious destination.
The rough draft of this trip had been sketched out on the back of a cigarette packet months earlier, with the plan to drop everything and fly in on a big swell. I had never been to that part of the world and was very keen to go. Spontaneous trips have their hurdles here and there, but honestly I wouldn’t change this way of living. It’s instant excitement from the moment a plan is in the air. First up, you need to keep the missus sweet at home, only then can you work on your itinerary. Can I get there in time to get the best conditions? Are the maps continuing to hold the forecast we need and have been lusting after? Do I have the boards I need to tackle the waves we are chasing? Will my sack continue to shrivel so? Because surfing with Jason, you can guarantee it’s going to be big.
