Our first day on the water was a great warm up. We surfed at a point break that like most places had its various spots to take off with locals getting more and more serious the heavier it got. The further up the reef one ventured the bigger the waves, but they were also breaking very fast. At high tide the wave was working beautifully and fast slab sections started showing themselves as the tide dropped. Fun at first, but quickly the slabs started forming all sorts of steps and knuckles making it very hard to ride. Dropping into 6 foot waves draining off a live sharp reef that’s clearly showing its teeth is challenging on any surf board let alone on a 10’3’ SUP. Never the less, I managed to pick off some good rides and pull into some scary unmake-able barrels without hurting myself or breaking my board. The rule of the dessert is to get out and surf before the afternoon before the strong thermals blast in.
