By Central American standards El Golfete isn’t a large expanse of water, but when you have all your kit strapped to the front of a board in 35 degree heat, you have already paddled 15 km that morning, and you are faced with the expectation of a night in the jungle, the proposed paddle suddenly looks a little more serious.
After swallowing down some water and a quick lunch of fruit, bread and cheese, we struck out across the lake. It was an incredible feeling out there on water; it was so still it looked almost solid. Although an occasional water taxi chugged smokily past this did nothing to detract from the beauty of the surrounding forests and intense blue skies. As we paddled there was an occasional splash which we guessed were resident manatees shyly making their retreat as we glided too close.
