A short distance, yes, but what a change of landscapes and vibes! Bocas is a mix of Latin and Caribbean, sometimes Polynesian cultures and you can see it in the brightly painted houses built over the lagoons. There is limitless potential for exploration and photography: nine main islands, two hundred small islands and fifty-two sandbanks. Some places are exposed to open seas and swells while others are completely shut off and sheltered. It’s a paradise for cruising and snorkelling; tropical postcard beaches, mangroves and small fishing villages and all around the taxi boats that will help you discover this area. You don’t have a choice but to use them, everything you do revolves around the ocean. For a surf, you’ll have to deal with the boats and make sure they when you want picking up after your session. It’s a bit like Bali where the industrious fishermen take people out to reefs; expect a little bargaining but not too much. The prices are pretty much fixed here.
You need to watch the forecast carefully since the swell won’t come from far: this is the Caribbean and they can be as strong as they will be short. Also you have to face the rain; you won’t get a green country without it. And here it is very green.
