Ninety million years ago these chalk stalks, known as Old Harry Rocks, were but an accumulation of ooze under the sea. Around this time, mammals and birds were really starting to get evolved and most of the western US was still under water.
Quite a lot’s happened between then and more recently, when Dave White piloted his drone to take this photo. Highlights include: the Devil (known as Old Harry) sleeping on the rocks, the infamous Poole Pirate Harry Paye hiding his ship here waiting in ambush, and a Viking raider, Earl Harry, being turned into a chalk column after drowning in a ship wreck. Just another day in Dorset eh.
