This does not stop the surfers from surfing this clean, often hollow wave. Stand up paddlers however are not really welcome on good days. It doesn’t matter, let them have fun with the sea urchins – there are still enough spots nearby. Just inside Lagide is Prainha, a clean, sand bottomed beach that’s well suited to (and well subscribed by) beginners. Keep following this beach eastwards and the punchy, race-able semi-closeouts grow considerably in size. To the west is Praia do Baleal. The further round you go, the bigger and more powerful the waves become. Going a little further down the beach to the bay towards Peniche, you’ll find the surfspot Middle of the Bay, location of Taylor Knox and Mick Fanning’s tow surf exploits in 2009. Naturally it is prudent to ensure possession of the requisite skill and equipment set before attempting it on a decent swell.
