For some years now, Robby, Michi and I have been talking about a surf trip to Big Island, but for several reasons, it never came together. With the islands so close together, you would think it would be easy, but the whole gang is always busy and conditions on Maui are pretty amazing most of the time. In January of 2014, the swell and wind conditions finally shaped up enough for the guys to plan a trip over to Big Island.
Big island is the most southern of the Hawaiian Islands and as the name already suggests, the biggest and youngest. Driving here is a totally different story to driving on Maui. For example, the distances between points are much greater, so local knowledge is priceless and helps you maximize your time on the water. It also has an active volcano, meaning it is still in its growth process. It is also famous for the annual Ironman Triathlon, which brings the world’s toughest endurance crowd to our majestic island.
