Landing in the capital San Juan, the first sensations hit as we step off the plane: it’s hot and humid, but it doesn’t diminish the locals’ broad smiles. The atmosphere is very Latin, everyone speaks Spanish, we hear “hermano” and “mi amor” all around us…I’d expected it to feel more Americanised but no; I live in Spain and I feel directly at home and am soon sparking up conversations. Talking comes easy and reveals the benevolence and simplicity of Puerto Rico. It’s said that you shouldn’t rely on your first impressions, but in this case, I have a good feeling about the rest of the trip. Raf and Manu won’t arrive till tomorrow which leaves me a night to discover the capital and prepare the ground for the next days.
