Shacks is also one of the many downwind routes on the island. When looking for a place to stay for the first night, we met Miguel, owner of sup shop Azul Verde in Isabella. While browsing around his shop, we’re stunned by the number of downwind boards for sale or for rent. He explains that the downwind scene is burgeoning, and that competitions are organized very frequently, like the Paddle Royal race a few years ago which attracted the world’s elite. Puerto Rico’s proximity to the United States and the latter’s buoyant economy has facilitated the development of this less than accessible discipline. Even if we did not have the opportunity to test the downwind run for ourselves, we can still tell you that the wind is constant the potential is huge.
