It’s always our passion to search…but it comes with the inconvenience of carting heavy equipment across the globe. That pain of checking in big luggage has discouraged more than one person over the years, and I’m one of them. Nonetheless, compromises do exist and they don’t make it any less existing. Our continent offers at its fringes jewels as great as the most famous ones from the other side of the world. Stuck for more than a year because of an endless knee rehabilitation, I find myself at this exact moment where, finally, I have to banish the fear and jump on my board once again.
I was randomly browsing Google maps when I noticed that the south of Portugal offered similar aspects to that of Morocco and even Chile, places I’ve been drawn to before. After consulting the forecast and getting in touch with a few locals via Facebook, I take the decision to go on a solo trip, in my van, just like in the old days. Of course I take all my toys because we never know what awaits us. And when you think about it, it’s not such a big deal if you don’t find the perfect conditions when you have the chance to discover new places. And if you don’t like it, you’re free to go home whenever you like. After a few hours on the road and a few Tapas breaks in Spain and the soft melodies of Motörhead and Deftones in my ears (throw in some Pink Floyd for relaxation) I finally arrive at the Promised Land and a beach called Amoreira as a reddish light burns in the sky. It’s late summer and the tourists have gone, I already feel further from home than I expected.
