Out driving, we saw thin columns of white smoke rising from the forest and between houses. They were hot spots, or boilers – geothermic activity. In some places, they heat rivers, lagoons and even the open sea. The locals took take advantage of it, building natural hot baths. In the village of Furnas, we couldn’t believe our eyes. Boiling water seeps up from the street, and from taps in the walls. Some even pour fizzy water! These places were meeting points, where people fill bottles with soda, or make coffee and tea with water boiled by the earth.
