Handy Hints
Flights
Several flights a day leave from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada, with low cost airlines. Just beware the baggage limits.
Car rental
This is not so cheap, but considering the price of the flight, you should have some money to spend. A car is essential to enjoy the island.
Seasons
In wintertime the predominant swell is north, in summertime south, but the only thing you can predict is that it’s unpredictable. Best to go on a forecast.
Where to sleep
There is self catering and hotels to suit all tastes and prices. We preferred the tranquility of the south, near Caloura. If you want quicker access to town and the waves, try Ponta Delgada. Ribeira Grande is also a good choice, next to surf spots in the north and well connected. It’s the second largest city on the island, the old capital, with lovely facades and city streets.
