Beyond the beaches there is the rugged landscape of the granite interior, possibly best explored in a rental Fiat 500 as you start to pick away at the past of this island. Now an autonomous region of Italy, Sardinia was in fact connected to its motherland by a land link at various times throughout history as the sea levels rose and fell with different periods of glaciation. Around 20,000 years ago the people that had wandered across were cut off once and forever, developing into what would become the ancient Nuragic culture. You can see the remnants of Nuragic villages nestling preserved in valleys and today, the Sardinian people are characterised by their very ancient stock.
