How brilliant is that? Is there anywhere else on earth where the government funded tourist board puts you in touch with the local surfers so they can show you around? On land, fellow wolf-dog owner Alfie Stanger is taking some photos. Alfie forged his craft taking photos of the island’s wildlife, by his own admission he does it just for the love of it and his reward is being able to give a great photo to someone. The light was so fickle, my wave selection so meagre, but I reckon Aflie spun a bit of gold. Again, where else on earth?
Orkney was so gentle and the sea so powerful I could stay all winter but we’re back in the car, on the mainland and heading to the far north west tip of Britain, just to see what’s there. If you’ve never been, be prepared outside of tourist season because there’s nothing out there at all. Were it not for the tanker-like fuel reserves of the XC60 I’d probably have had to spend the winter somewhere out by Lochinver.
