Racers return year after year for that one quality that is so lacking in today’s fast-paced and growing SUP market: family. The Hawaiians call it ‘Ohana’, and that spirit of togetherness, camaraderie, mutual respect and support is fluid throughout. The organisers have created opportunities for every person of every ability to participate: the non-stop event that begins on Monday, the full five day event, team competition, day stages or daily SUP clinics for the locals and their families that come out from the surrounding villages and towns to support the athletes. The bridges and canals are lined with curious locals who cheer you on whether they know you or not. There are Frysan flags flying above houses, shops that not only show support and pride of local heritage, but also to welcome each athlete as they pass by. Words of encouragement are shouted in a language that most participants cannot understand, but the sentiment is easily conveyed through the genuine cheers and bright smiles. Yeah, this race is different.
