Seals were fascinated by my board. Initially they were hesitant, but as they grew used to me they danced closer and closer, playing hide and seek between the ice. One in particular played just off my nose, twisting and frolicking, obviously hoping I was a playmate. By the end of my paddle I had quite the entourage following me with 15 or more grey friends.
I stayed out until my extremities could take it no longer. My body was warm thanks to my suit, but my fingers and toes throbbed as I pulled myself onto the shore. Despite any discomfort, paddling Jökulsárlón Lagoon is an experience that will remain with me for life. It is a place that bewilders the senses and being able to SUP there allows you to experience it in a way few others ever will.
