The Bonus
Myvatn Lake is one of many Icelandic lakes that are culturally significant and as such protected from hordes of water users by restrictions. We planned to stay right on the lake shore in one of the many wooden chalets to be found across the country. I had no expectations to be able to SUP there and so when the chalet owner reassured us that as long as I stayed close to shore and didn’t draw attention to myself I would be just fine paddling. As the snow swirled around us I pottered out through the small islands and channels onto the lake. There was no chance of me going too far out as it turned out. The main body of water was frozen solid. On my own in what was by now almost a blizzard I gazed out across an enchanted, frosty wonderland. The snow whipped across the icy surface and I breathed deep and savoured the solitude.
