Hjalparfoss did not disappoint and was the icing on our frost covered cake. This was the most challenging paddle I did in Iceland, as well as by far the shortest distance covered. Entrance involved wading through 50 cm thick floating chunks of ice and around black boulders until I could push tale first out into the current. This is a big water fall and with big waterfalls comes a lot of moving water. Battling the current, I headed upstream to the falls. I soon became aware of the biggest hazard of paddling icy winter rivers; the 100 kg chunks of ice half submerged, floating downstream, and ready to tip you in should they catch you at an awkward angle.
