The Last Right Turn
After Exmouth we headed to Broome, WA where we could paddle our boards and swim but no swell hits there unless its cyclone season. As it happened we were shorebound for the first few days as the beaches were closed due to a crocodile in the area. This would be the first interruption to our surfing due to crocs and not sharks.
Let’s fast forward across the top end where we hit Darwin, before our longest drive to surf from Darwin to Agnes Waters. Agnes is the first place on the eastern seaboard that gets waves if you are coming from the north and it took eight days to travel the 3,146km to the beach.
When we did arrive it was bitter sweet. We had arrived to see a small three foot perfect wave breaking over a crocodile-free sand point break right in front of the caravan. But even though we were still miles from home, that turn onto the East coast started the final march towards home and the return to reality was getting closer.
As I write, we are almost home. Technically, we could be home in just a tiny 8 hour drive, but happily there is time yet and ahead of us is a stretch of the NSW coast with more surfable options than any other state in the country. There’s nothing like finishing on a high.
