The cold water splashes onto my board and freezes straight away. With long and quiet paddle strokes I push myself through small shafts. At times it feels like I’m paddling through air and there is little propulsion – just before water freezes it exists in a very unique phase of half liquid, half solid, less dense than in its fluid state. In places the lagoon is just 20 inches deep while only 1 meter away it falls away into the abyss.
