Our favourite camping spot was in Ithaca. We named it ‘the bay of dreams.’ There was a natural water well for washing, big caves for exploring, shady olive groves so perfect for setting up camp and goats which roamed through the trees right outside our tent at 6am – a perfect alarm clock with the bells on their necks ringing as the 100 or so passed through – the chime actually sounded rather relaxing. Apart from the weasels scurrying around our tent at midnight this was the perfect camping set up. The sunrises were incredible; the sun like a ball of fire above the little island opposite put you in a good mood as soon as you woke up.
We met some great people at this beach all travelling around the Ionian but using different modes of transport. A young French couple who were hiking, an Austrian family in their old campervan, an older couple on a speed boat with a tent and another couple kayaking. It was great to share travel stories and wild camping spot recommendations.
