The Scenery
The scenery varied incredibly from island to island. The North east of Lefkada being quite built up with busier beaches, ports and fishing villages. However the further South we travelled the more remote, wild and rugged the coastline became. We were just amazed at the amount of things you see from the ocean that you wouldn’t necessarily see from the land. We passed beautiful Greek tavernas with jetties and steps winding all the way down to the waters edge, huge villas with beautiful pools on the cliff tops and families launching little sailing boats. We drew a lot of curious looks, and waves and smiles from people on the shoreline and in boats.
The coastline around the South eastern part of the island was so dramatic, huge towering cliffs with the most incredible rock formations, clear rock pools full of bright red starfish and sea urchins. The snorkeling was splendid.
Ithaca was completely different again. A lot less populated, remote and un-spoilt. We passed beach after beach with not a single person; many could only be accessed from the sea. The ‘bay of dreams’, which we camped at for a few days, was sat directly opposite a tiny island on which sat a small church. Apparently the church was built to watch over and to guard all the people at sea and once a year the locals come over to the islands in their little fishing boats and have a ceremony.
