By following some of the tiny tracks hidden in the dense vegetation, we eventually find a number of Me’ae, ‘populated’ by a combination of immense stone tikis and majestic banyan trees. These Me’ae are usually highly sacred places, places of “tapu” (taboo), decorated with religiously significant carvings and edifices. These rocks and the banyan trees form an integral part of the Me’ae, casting their sacred shadows on the surrounding rocks.
