The manifesto
Marquesians have always been conscious of their dependence on the forces of nature which, from time to time, bring devastation to their world. Marquesians are therefore careful of their impact on the world around them and have strict rules to govern how they live in it. Even simply cutting a tree to build a boat or dwelling has to be done in a spirit of respect for the ancient rites and spirits. A Marquesian understands completely the potential and the limits of his land, all his actions governed by consideration for the extended tribal family: his ancestors, the living, and the future descendants who represent the islands’ great richness. When a child was born the family planted the trees that would assure its future and well being.
