The following days I spent some time back in the kayak to get used to the incomprehensibly large rapids that we had on our doorstep until I felt it was time to take my board to the world infamous ‘Nile Special’ rapid. And this was where the inevitable was made clear to me: this was going to be hard. Really hard. The skills I had been polishing back in the UK on my local rapids were immediately rendered useless. A lot more practise out here, on the front line was going to be needed.
