Most of the islands are surrounded by reefs which have to be sought out and there’s a very good chance that you will be the only one surfing on the water. The wind can affect some of the waves but at this time of the year the North swells wrap around and set off the best wave on Union Island, tucked up in leeward side. The wave is a very nice bowl with two sections breaking on shallow reef at low tide. It will be just you and your buddies sharing waves or relaxing ashore underneath the abundant tropical vegetation.
Union Island has other small wave spots for beginners, one on Big Sand next to the Sparrows beach club restaurant where the waves are rarely get over two feet and the flat bottom is hard but not sharp. The JT Pro Center also has a nice wave next to the airport, a couple of shoulder high bowls which are best when the onshore wind eases up a bit.
