So, when Cyclone Pam started sending its huge lines towards the Southeastern Pacific, nobody in Chile was really expecting such quality. Perfect 12-14 foot swell at 18 seconds, hitting Punta de Lobos with the perfect direction, on a day with no wind and barely any current. Fast hollow waves and racing glass from the famous “Morros” all the way down to the “Mirador”.
In the words of big wave superstar Ramon Navarro, it was “I think this is the best I have ever seen it”. Other locals were saying it was “better than anything I’ve ever dreamed of”. Personally I had some of my best waves ever that day, not the biggest maybe, but definitely the most perfect I had ever had.
For sure that day redefined the word “perfection” for Chile’s most famous pointbreak, and will be the reference against which all other days will now be judged. Still, it felt weird that we had been blessed by the same energy from Cyclone Pam that had done so much damage a week earlier in Vanuatu. Mother Nature can be very unfair sometimes… SUP
