“Third time is the charm. After two failed sessions testing the Soloshot3 and getting frustrated, I got it to work well on the third attempt. Tracking and automatically zooming worked great and I got some good footage. I was in the water for about 1.5 hours and the camera filmed the entire session without running out of battery or memory, next time I’ll test it longer. The break is about ¾ of a mile out, so I was impressed by how tight the framing was. I have the 65x Zoom/ 4K version. Some of the issuses I had: Tracking has to be centered manually, it’s a little more effort that I thought but not bad once you figure out how to do it.
When the camera got hit by some light wind gusts later in the session the footage became very shaky and unusable, but I think the results are great and I will certainly use it more in the future. Tracking sometimes lags behind if direction changes and does not always keep the subject in the center of the frame but considering the zoom used, I was actually impressed by the smoothness and accuracy. The Soloshot3 is a great tool for getting footage from land if you don’t have a pro cameraman at your service.
